A zone of almost 100 monumental forts winds through the water-rich landscape of the western Netherlands: the New Dutch Waterline and the Defence Line of Amsterdam. They tell the extraordinary story of how the country organised its defences with an ingenious water system and impressive structures. Recently, these historic defences were jointly declared a Unesco World Heritage Site as Hollandse Waterlinies. Heritage preservation went hand in hand with innovation. Beautiful, contemporary designs blended into the historical surroundings.

The English-language digital publication Remains of resistance describes both waterlines together: both the history of development and the creative approach of designers, entrepreneurs, administrators and the many volunteers. Remains of resistance is a compilation of the publication Wisseling van de wacht and 'scape magazine 18, both published in 2022.

Wisseling van de wacht was made possible with financial support from Creative Industries Fund NL , Unesco World Heritage Hollandse Waterlinies, Van Eesteren-Fluck & Van Lohuizen Foundation.
